Get To Know Your Orchids – The Top 5 Hybrids Woth Knowing When Collecting Orchids

There are over 100,000 orchid hybrids recognized by the official botanical organizations worldwide. With so many varieties of orchid hybrids, keeping up with the new hybrids let alone pronounce their names can be a bit disorienting!

What Is A Hybrid

The definition of hybrid from dictionary.com is “the offspring of two animals or plants of different breeds, varieties, species, or genera, esp. as produced through human manipulation for specific genetic characteristics.”

In most cases, cross-pollination of two orchid genuses that have similar characteristics under natural conditions results to a superior variety of orchid. Orchid growers try to produce orchid hybrids because of the increase in the demand from orchid lovers and enthusiasts. Since orchid hybrids have more superior characteristics than their orchid parents, they offer better color combination flowers, more number of flowers and stronger plants.

Here are the top 5 well-known orchid hybrids to familiarize you with:

1. Cattleya Hardyana: The Cattleya Hardyana is the result of Cattleya Dowiana and Cattleya Gigas. The flowers that the Hardyana produce are yellow with dark red lips, a cross between the flower of Gigas which is mauve colored and a touch of Dowiana.

2. Epiphronitis Veitchii: This hybrid has been awarded the first class certificate from The Royal Horticultural Society. It is a cross between the Epidendrum Radicans and Sophronitis coccinea. First known growth was in the year 1980. The Epiphronitis Veitchii blooms vibrant large red flowers.

3. Brassolaelio cattleya: The Brassolaelio cattleya is a result of crossing three orchid generas, Laelia, Cattleya and Brassavola. These types of orchid hybrid possess considerable commercial value. They bloom showy flowers in colors of orange, pinks, purple and yellow.

4. Potinara: If there are hybrids resulting from three orchid generas, there are also hybrids from crossing four orchid generas and one such hybrid is the Potinara. This hybrid is a cross from of Brassavola, Laelia, Cattleya and Sophronitis. You will find that this type of hybrids have many species as well. Blooms ranges from spotted yellow to cream colored flowers with lavender tips.

5. Calanthe Dominii: The very first reported success of this hybrid was back in 1856. It is a cross between Calanthe Masuca and Calanthe Furcata. It is of terrestrial origin and you will find many common species of Calanthe Dominii but it doesn’t they are less beautiful.

Do not be overwhelmed by the number of orchids there are in the world. It is even a more exciting fact there are so many kinds to choose from.

Vinyl Storage sheds provide a very useful alternative to building your own storage shed. They come in all shapes and sizes to suit every pocket and location.

Many people use them as an attractive add on to their house as either a home office, hobby room or a great place to store just about anything.

Reason 1 – Your vinyl shed can be bought in kit form… and can be assembled with a little help from a friend or neighbour following the step by step instructions that should come with the kit.

Reason 2 – Maintenance free – vinyl sheds are practically maintenance free and will not suffer from rust, mildew, rot or fade. And they are also fire retardant, which is a big advantage over the conventional wooden shed.

Reason 3 – Longevity – because of the material used in construction and the solid metal frame around which your vinyl shed will be built, vinyl sheds are very durable and will last many, many years.

They are also very resilient to all the weather variations which can be thrown at it..depending on your climate.

And unlike a plastic shed, which can crack or warp in sunlight, or a metal shed which can be pretty noisy when it rains, the vinyl shed has none of these drawbacks.

You can also specify shelving specifically for your vinyl shed and they clearly offer an attractive alternative to constructing your own wooden shed from scratch. Some people love to get stuck into a project like building a shed..and are as happy in the process as with the outcome. But if you have a need for a quick solution to extra storage or an area where you can indulge your hobby then a vinyl shed is a viable alternative.

The Best Herbal Acne Remedies

With most medical issues, including acne, prevention is the best line of defense. It’s

almost always harder to clear something up rather than prevent it from happening

in the first place. If you want to find effective herbal acne remedies that can help

prevent outbreaks to begin with, as well as help clear up the outbreaks that seem

to happen no matter what you do, here is the article for you.

Of course, always talk to your doctor first before making any changes and adding

other medicines, even herbal ones, since there can be dangerous interactions

between drugs.

You’ve probably heard the advice to cut out greasy food from your diet, and that

seems to make sense. After all pimples are caused by too much oil so you shouldn’t

eat more oil, right? No, not really. While you want to cut out a lot of greasy foods

from your diet the reason is not what you may have thought. These types of foods

are simple carbohydrates which will be metabolized as sugar by your body. That

can lead to huge hormonal fluctuations which can throw a lot of systems in your

body out of balance…including your oil producing glands, the sebaceous glands.

Instead of eating a ton of simple carbohydrates try to eat more lean protein, fruits,

and vegetables. Also keep your body flushed out by drinking a lot of water. Just

making these simple changes to your daily routine can go a long way to eliminating

breakouts.

If you still get breakouts, try some of these natural herbal remedies instead of the

harsh, potentially dangerous, acne drugs.

Tea tree oil is an antiseptic which can be applied directly to your pimples,

whiteheads, and blackheads, and be easily absorbed into your skin. The oil can

help dry your pimples so they will clear up more quickly.

Calendula has a lot of vitamin E and is a great way to heal your acne pimples up

more quickly.

Lavender essential oil is an antiseptic and antibiotic which can help kill the bacteria

that has caused your outbreak.

When it comes to effective herbal acne remedies this articles is only the tip of the

iceberg. There are many other herbs that you can use not only for healthy skin but

for overall health and well being. Learn all you can about herbs and how they can

help keep your skin clear and your body healthy. You may find that you can get

much better results with herbal remedies and even save yourself a lot of money

over prescription drugs.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Lawn Care

A great lawn is part of a great yard in general. So how do you get the lawn you’re looking for? Here are a few lawn care do’s and don’ts from Southern Lawn Care-a professional lawn service company that serves Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco.

Don’t-put too much fertilizer. Applying fertilizers on your lawn is the first basic step in lawn care but you have to know what type of grass you have and what plant food to use. Horticultural studies show that the nitrogen in fertilizer can burn your lawn, and when temperatures get higher, the likelihood of burning goes up. To prevent damage, go for a slow-release fertilizer with lower nitrogen content. Make sure you follow the directions carefully when applying it to the grass.

Do-water you lawn on a consistent schedule, preferably before the sun rises in the morning (around 5 a.m.) or late at night. Moisture is best absorbed during these times because the temperature is relatively cooler. If you have just planted a new lawn, you will usually need to water once a day so the seeds can germinate and a good solid root system can form. On average, this can last from 2-8 weeks, depending on the type and grass and season. Also, it’s best to water deeply that watering too often. Frequent, light watering produces a shallow-rooted lawn, and you don’t want that.

Don’t-water your lawn before mowing. Horticultural magazines will say that that you should water your lawn a day before mowing to avoid the ugly crowning at the tip of your grass. Watering your lawn a day before they get mowed will give them time to recover and make them look nicer as they start growing again. Mowing should also depend on the type of grass’ optimal height. Recommended mowing heights are 3 inches for tall fescue, 2 1/2 inches for perennial ryegrass, and 1 inch for bentgrass.

Do-apply occasional pesticide or herbicide to your lawn. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, about 9 million pounds of 2, 4-D is used on U.S. lawns every year. This pesticide is the most commonly used pest control solution for residential and commercial use. Grass grows best in a biologically active soil where soil organisms like earthworms recycle plant material so that nutrients are slowly released in the root zone of the grass. Any excess of organisms like ants and worms can cause your grass to die so an occasional application of pesticide-like once every 4 months, would be good.

Do-remove excess thatch. A thatch is the partially decomposed grass stems, roots, and leaves found between the green part of a lawn and the surface of the soil. Thatch problems are caused by excessive fertilizing and watering, infrequent mowing, and frequent pesticide use. Surrounding trees and shrubs could also cause thatches, especially if they do not receive enough water. Provide more water to grass that have trees and shrubs nearby.

Do-design your garden efficiently. Planning is the key, taking into account the existing environment such as trees and shrubs, plants, sun, wind and water. The landscape design should ensure water drainage back to the ground’s water table. Patios and walkways should be sloped so water drains into the lawn bed.

Do-try to use organic fertilizers for your soil. This is actually more for the environment but using organic fertilizers and plant food decreases the release of green house gases; so it’s always good to do your part.

Try looking at horticultural magazines for more tips on caring for your lawn. You can also contact your most trusted lawn care specialist in Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco.

Growing Roses – 9 Easy Care Tips For Beautiful Roses

For some people, growing beautiful healthy roses can seem a bit like hard work. When really this is not the case. It’s just a matter of doing a few small things regularly. Here’s nine small things you can start today, to make sure your roses really bloom.

1.The best time to prune your roses is early spring. Or once they start budding. These buds will eventually become branches.

2.Cut off all the dead and damaged branches first. Then cut all except five of the remaining healthy branches off. These should be roughly about the thickness of a pencil.

3.Cut the bushes from about a third up to one half, depending how tall you want them. Cut above the outward facing buds, this will encourage them to grow upwards. Doing this will improve the air circulation and shape when the bud opens up.

4.Always ensure your hand shears are well sharpened. And take care to watch when pruning climbing roses. The branches on these often overlap, so watch what branches your cutting.

5.Cut down on your work by mulching. Mulching means that your roses will need less watering and weeding, plus it also helps stop disease. Organic mulches are the best, wood chips, pine-needles, or better yet, your own grass cuttings.

6.During winter add an extra couple of inches to the soil at the base of your roses. It helps provide a little more heat during the winter.

7.Try and avoid using those little white plastic cones during the winter, as these can actually trap too much heat during the thaw.

8.Always water your roses at the base, not on the foliage as this will cause fungal disease. You should water your roses lightly, but often.

9.Always keep the area where your roses are clear. This will help with circulation.

So there you go. A few easy little bits of work for you to help grow beautiful healthy roses. To see the best gardening videos available visit Col’s site at http://www.bestgardeningvideos.com

Custom and Eco Friendly Greenhouse Watering Systems

Coming up with a custom watering system for your greenhouse is never an easy task. There are such a lot of different types to select from depending on what you are making plans to grow. The first thing to settle on, naturally, is what types of plants you are planning to nurture, because the kind of watering system you’ll eventually need is seriously set by the types of plants most often grown in your greenhouse.

As an example, tropical plants require more water and often grow best with a misting delivery system. Ask yourself if the plants you are growing will grow best with a drip irrigation system, a misting system or even a running water system. Each system has it’s own unique features and setup that help you in achieving the perfect balance of water to your greenhouse, and keeps from wasting water.

A drip system usually sets down in the pot or soil and has a slow, steady drip that keeps plants clammy without over watering the soil. Drip systems are usually made from hoses or bottles with tiny holes. The holes in hoses cause a high surface ratio and only permit small amounts of water thru. If you don’t have the wherewithal to buy a drip system, you can always make one out of a gallon jug or a 2-liter bottle. By cutting some holes in the cap of the bottle and a few around the sides of the bottom, you can make your own drip system which will keep your plants well watered even if you forget about them from time to time.

Misting systems are good to use for plants that only need a small amount of water, for example cacti because their root systems make the best of any water applied. Misting systems are typically store bought because it is hard to get the holes exactly right.

Running water systems are probably the easiest to create and can be made using PVC pipe, just like any other irrigation system. An fantastic good idea for the running water systems is to use barrels to gather rainwater. This is a way to water your plants by conserving water and cutting back on the costs of upkeep. When planning your running water system with barrels, be certain to put in a good working valve so that you can retain all the water you catch from the rain.

Greenhouse watering systems can be as unique as the gardener who is using them. There are many different kinds and uses and can either be pre-made or designed yourself. It is best to keep the plants together which have identical elementary watering needs, simply to make it easier to adequately water each plant. If all else fails, ask your local gardening expert to help determine which kind of watering system is correct for you and you may be surprised to find they could have already got a system drawn out that fits your eco-friendly watering system needs.

The Journey of Hydroponics Systems

The history of Hydroponics is quite an interesting one. It has evolved and introduced several innovations to the farming industry ever since it came into being. The word itself means labor with water as ‘Hydro’ means water in Greek and ‘Ponos’ means labor. The process is actually pretty old and has been used for hundreds of years. The first known published book describing the process of growing plants without using soil was in 1627 and titled ‘Sylva Sylvarum.’ The book was written by Sir Francis Bacon. Ever since then, Hydroponics has gained popularity among people and is still used today to produce healthy nutritional food products.

The next innovation in Hydroponics came in 1699 when John Woodward, a British naturalist performed various experiments with his water cultures. Through his experiments he found out that plants actually grew better in less pure water than distilled water. All his findings were published and gathered a lot of interest in water cultures. Over the years more studies were performed and by 1842, a list was made containing nine essential nutrients that the plants can’t live without. After that, the technique for the process was developed further to get a more productive plant growing system.

The next big development in Hydroponics happened in 1929. William Frederick Gericke, who was a professor at the University of California started promoting the concept of using solution culture for agricultural purposes. He was able to grow healthy and fresh tomato vines in his own backyard by using a nutrient solution. He was also the one who introduced the world to the term ‘Hydroponics.’ However he often stated that the term wasn’t his creation and was suggested by Dr. W. A. Setchell. The work of Gericke astounded many and revolutionized the process of plant agriculture. In 1940, he wrote his own book detailing all his works and the results of the process.

Since then, a few decided to research Gericke’s claim of finding Hydroponics as the next innovative method for plant growth. The studies were performed by Dennis. R. Hoagland and Daniel. I. Arnon. Their report indicated that Hydroponics was not a special process as the yields were pretty much similar to other farming techniques done on quality soils. However their reports failed to provide the necessary insight to truly justify their findings. Several advantages of the process of Hydroponics were completely passed over. But their reports provided a unique perspective for future studies.

Wake Island was one of the first places to successfully utilize hydroponics systems to grow vegetables. The process became a huge hit over there as there was no soil on the island and so this was the only way to grow vegetables and plants. That happened in the 1930s. Ever since then many people all over the world and various organizations including NASA have performed various studies and experiments regarding this unique process. Studies still continue today to find the most efficient and innovative form of Hydroponic system to not only increase the yield but also to improve the quality of the vegetables grown.

Fragrant Orchids

Fragrant orchids are a pleasure to raise for their sweet perfume and exotic appearance. There are certain species of orchids that are more fragrant than others.

Fragrant Orchids – The Science of Fragrance
Orchids have evolved into particular shapes, colors and smells to attract pollinators, so they may reproduce. Some orchids attract only a few very specific pollinators, so they have fragrance when these pollinators are the most active, either by day or by night.

Orchid fragrance is an oily substance found in glands called osmopheres on the outside edges of the orchid’s roots, leaves and flowers. This oily fragrant substance will change into vapor form, enabling the plant to smell. Not all orchid fragrances can be sensed by humans. These specific fragrances are what primarily attract the insects that pollinate the orchid.

The orchid flower’s fragrance is produced at a time daily when the pollinators are the most active, so the fragrance can have maximum effect. For instance, some orchids, namely the Phalenophilus, are fragrant only at night, and are white or other very light colors because they are pollinated by moths.

It is believed that over half of all orchids are pollinated during the day by bees and wasps. The orchid flowers have scents like narcissus, lilly of the valley and sweet peas. The colors of the flowers tend to be bright blue, yellow, purple or green.
